Greece - Week 1 - Nafplio

 


Our whole group of 115 was able to be booked on a normal flight from Tel Aviv to Athens leaving on Sunday night October 15th at 10:30 pm.  Looking back, it seems like a miracle that so many seats were available on the exact day that met the needs of the program to continue classes for the students in Greece the following week.  Here is our group getting ready for boarding and a picture of the hotel and the town of Nafplio.



Nafplio was an incredible surprise.  It is a quaint little town overlooked by a Venetian fort that was built in the 1700's.  The views from the fort at the top were amazing.  The city has a reputation of being a family friendly place that many residents have lived for their entire life.














We spent the first week entirely in this Greek Island paradise.  The students had classes in the early morning, a few at night but were free in the afternoons.  One of our tour buses was set up on a schedule to shuttle people from the hotel to the port and to nearby beaches. We had some time to attend classes with the students and see how exceptional the faculty was in teaching the New Testament. 
 




As Service Couples, we had some incredible adventures on our free days serving together.  One of my favorites will be the sailboat charter we arranged here with the Huntsman's to take us to a beautiful beach one hour south of town.  The captain and crew were the best.  The captain cooked a delicious lunch while we were free to use the stand-up paddle board, snorkel and swim in the warm and super clear blue/green water.

Rober BYU Jerusalem Center - Arrival/First Week

In case you have not heard, Leah and I have been called to serve as volunteers in charge of hosting and music at the BYU Jerusalem Center for the next 18 months.  Leah will be the organist at the Center, and I will be part of a team leading tours three days each week. About the BYU Jerusalem Center The Jerusalem Center is home for a study abroad program for BYU students.  Approximately 90 students come here for a 15-week semester taking classes in Old Testament, New Testament, Arabic, Hebrew and Ancient Near East Studies.  Each week they take a local field trip in or near Jerusalem to see first-hand places they study in classes. Greece Week 2 - Paul's Missionary Travels and Historic Sites

  The Greece field trip dates were planned right from the start of the semester.  That was the reason efforts were made to evacuate everyone to Greece the week before the planned trip so all of the reservations could be maintained for the field trip.    Our trip started in Thessaloniki.  It is the second largest city in Greece.  Here are some of the attractions we visited: The White Tower, standing along the beach promenade, is the symbol of Thessaloniki. Constructed in the 16th century by the Ottomans, it was used as a fortress, a prison, and a university workshop. The Arch of Galerius was constructed in 305 AD to celebrate and commemorate the final victory of Roman general Galerius over the Persians. This victory is the main theme of the carved scenes on this arch. The Rotonda is an impressive circular building in the center of Thessaloniki. Bethany Field Trip, The Upper Room, Haifa, Old City

Field Trips Here is a summary of a 15-week semester for the students.  They take classes on the Old Testament, New Testament, Arabic, Hebrew and Near East studies. Every week they normally have a bus trip (or a walk) to a nearby location that was discussed in their classes.  They also spend 10 days living in the Galilee area to see historic sites and once a semester they travel to Jordan and either Greece, Turkey or Egypt. A few weeks ago, I was able to go on their bus trip to Bethany, Bethpage and the Mount of Olives.  Here are some pictures of that trip: Mount of Olives devotional.
